It’s lovely to meet you. Let me introduce myself.

My name is Martin Dutton. I am a registered Clinical Psychologist offering evidence based treatment services and psychotherapy to adults and adolescents. My specialty is in treating various Anxiety Disorders and Depression, however this is not exhaustive.

I would love to share my experience with you, and why I have chosen to specialise in the treatment of the above.

I have suffered from anxiety and depressive symptoms since I was an adolescent. My parents did not know what to do with me, and as such, I was thrown from Psychiatrist to Psychologist, over and over again.

It honestly felt the loneliest period; I felt that no-one understood what I was going through. I was desperate to create an understanding.

This followed me into young adulthood, where I seemed to "rebel" as an avoidance technique. I felt I could not face my inner "demons" and fought against having to genuinely SIT with my emotions...

Fast forward some years... I eventually found the right Psychiatrist and Psychologist. They assisted me to manage my anxiety and depression, and while it took time, it allowed me to live a FULL and HONEST experience.

I still consult with my Psychologist, as I, like you, are human and we experience a range of happenings and emotions and thoughts all the time. I continuously strive to life my authentic life, and be the best version of myself that I can be.

I can tell you that it IS possible to be free of anxiety and depression, just as I have made it through these dark times.

It is manageable and I can assure you that with the correct treatment, you will live a symptom managed life.

My stance to psychotherapy is to create a non-judgmental environment in which you can safely explore your difficulties and vulnerabilities and address your challenges in the sessions, while feeling contained within the therapeutic space. I believe in working authentically and collaboratively with you to help you achieve your therapeutic goals.

I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from WITS University and have experience practicing psychotherapy in various mental health settings such as universities, community health clinics, tertiary hospitals, hospital psychiatric units and mental health clinics, in addition to out-patient settings.

In practice, I work from an eclectic approach as I have found therapeutic flexibility to be helpful in meeting my patients’ needs. My therapeutic approach mainly draws INITIALLY from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Insight-Oriented and Psychodynamic psychotherapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). If need be, I will use other modalities.
